I saw that, but thought it was a 40k thing. What is Torrent of fire?

I read a bit on the link they have, and it seems they only tested on 40k. I also didn't see anything about turning in army lists, just game day scoring.It does seem like a pretty good idea for sure. I saw on the letter about turning 40k lists in early is why I asked. Maybe not enough people in fantasy or maybe not as well organized.

Its just basically a tournament organizing software on the Web. It allows players to just input their results directly and the Judges to hand out table assignments all online and instantly. It cuts down on paper and time of getting players the information they want.

It also lets people anywhere in the world see the live rankings of the event. Its actually kind of nifty.

According to the newsletter today, 2 of 64 Fantasy spots left. 25 of 256 for 40k.

Fantasy rules have finally been updated, accounting for units sizes for bonus points among other things.

The below was posted over on the Warhammer Forum. Two years ago when I was the ringer I felt Fantasy was a unwanted stepchild and it seems to have gotten worse. At least I hope you guys still had fun.

"NOVA is over.

Highlights:

No tables numbers

No match ups lists... a megaphone was used. Ran late most of the time.

$105 to play with ZERO support from the NOVA itself. ZERO. A local game store stepped up (dropezone) for terrain, boards, and swag.

Org had no computer to keep scores (thanks to Jerry Parsley who tried to help them there but...)

The spread sheet was messed up every round

GT rules were a mess; most of the packet rules were ignored or not used at all

No sports scores were given, no best opponents were picked. Yet the award was given to the person with the worst still there

Packet scoring was 50% paint 50% battle... which was changed to about 24% paint 76% at the last minute costing many people awards

Paint judging was horrible. Many of the top armies were not in the top of the GT. "What the %$# are they thinking" from Crystal
Brush/golden daemon winner when he was shown who the TO's picked.

Rules judges: no using your generals inspiring presence LD on stubborn. Stank can pivot charge as in turn and hit a unit beside it 1" away on their flank. How the death Snipe spell worked changed at least twice. Basically listening to the judge talk he played a hybrid 7th/8th game... no clue what was up with that.

6 games... all the same table set up and the same scenario.

Never EVER believe the NOVA people when they say they put the money back in. 100% false.

Venue was meh. For a "convention" this thing had maybe 5-6 booths. I was floored. $45 to get in and the "convention" was between an escalator and a nearby wall. Small is not the word.

Real highlights:

6 awesome games vs. awesome people. Had a blast playing.

Jerry trying to save the tournament. How much worse would it have been if he had not helped out?

Seeing all the clubs and people.

That guys sounds pretty upset. Eric did you win best painted just by sticking around? Haha. If not they should have gave ti to you.

I would have like to have seen a little difference in the scenarios, and I wouldn't have minded paying less $, but neither of those were surprises going in.

I got to go to a 6 game GT 30 minutes from my house with 64 people in attendance. I can't complain that much.

Interestingly I didn't have any really good games. I went 2-4 and pretty much every game was decided by T3.

I agree with most things he said. Also I think that those room we were playing had to run $2-3000 bucks for a holiday weekend rate.

I had a great time playing and hope my opponents feel the same. I was a winner for the first 3 and got smoked the last three with the big boys. All games went all 6 turns that I remember, even though Only had like 2 models for the last few turns Wink

Sheesh. For as many things that improved on the 40k side it seems like just as many went to hell for Fantasy. I poked my head into the Fantasy room for a minute and saw a good turn out, but sounds like that was the only good thing.

That blows for fantasy. 40k was a blast though. The only difficulty they had was the torrent of fire site went down for round 5 so they started to announce what the matchups were over the microphone.

I'm also miffed that they couldn't read the giant WITHDRAW I had put on my round 6 document, so instead of going 3 and 3 I'm now 3 and 4 because I was paired up for a game 7. . . .

I'm still going next year, hopefully we'll see more marines Laughing

I had a good time at the 40K GT. A few things that caught me off guard:

1. The NOVA is all about winning your games. There is hardly any emphasis on the hobby, painting, display boards, conversions, or sportsmanship. I heard many stories about people playing against someone who was willing to win at any cost (arguing about rules, slow-playing, ignoring rules and trying to get away with it, and even jeering while you were making armor saves). The serious players were ready for this kind of environment and choose an army list appropriately. I have never seen so many riptides all in one place before.

2. The terrain on the table makes an enormous difference in how the game plays. I am used to hardly any LOS blocking terrain, which makes shooting units very good and large models can always be targeted. But in every NOVA game you can expect at least 3 huge pieces of terrain that are tall enough to hide a riptide behind. In one game, my opponent deployed 3 riptides and 2 wave serpents all out of my line of sight. This makes going first a big disadvantage since I hardly got any shooting on the first turn. I obviously need more practice on tables with this kind of terrain because it really makes a difference in what units are good and which are bad. It also turns some games into a hiding competition, which drives me crazy. I don't play 40K to see who can hide their units better. And if I have to hear that someone's MC has a toe in area terrain to get a 5+ cover save one more time....

3. Please leave your sharks at home.

4. NOVA is not like a traditional GT (the ones that GW put on years ago). There are no cool terrain tables to look at. Very few converted or awesome looking armies. The hobby contributes nothing to your overall score.

With that said, I still had a good time. It was fun to hang out with all my Warhammer buddies for the weekend and take two days off work to play games. I met a few good players and learned a lot about my my army and competitive 40K. I'll take these lessons learned and my play will improve for it. And if I go to NOVA next year, my expectations will be set properly and I will enjoy the tournament even more.

Grats to Richard. The love and care he put into his army and conversions won him a painting award. An award which I put far more value on than the overall winner who simply had to win all 8 games.

I'm not opposed to LOS blocking terrain (hell, it's necessary) but the terrain at NOVA has long been a weak point. RipTides should probably never, ever, be out of LOS. Ever.

Good tournament, though. I was a little down on it before going in this year, but it improved over last year and I had 7 good to great games. I still don't like what NOVA is doing to the hobby (although whether or not NOVA is changing 40k or if NOVA reflects how 40k has changed is up for debate) but it's still a fun tournament, and it's local. Will go next year, assuming Chikara doesn't start back up and do Trios that weekend.
