I was not able to go last year, but with how bad they went I found out many players were not happy. That said NOVA was advertised on Dakka about 3 or 4 months ago. Yet outside of my posts inquiring about the Fantasy side of the event there has been NO info. Who is going? Who is not? Id like to know before I start looking at buying my ticket.

Come to Culpeper Saturday, play in the tournament, win it, get a free ticket to NoVa. Wink

Outside of winning a free pass somehow, I'm not going. It is generally too expensive. I'd rather save my money for a better event and/or a bunch of smaller ones.

I'm going. I have also gone the past two years. I think all the criticism is warranted, there is plenty of room for improvement.

However, I do love the overall atmosphere of the NOVA. Also, it is very local (2 metro stops away). So, even though it is a little more expensive in terms if the registration price, I have no travel or lodging to speak of, making it is the most affordable 2- day tournament that I go to each year.

From that Dakka thread

Quote:
Warhammer Fantasy has not been dropped. It's under new management by Steven Gant and we're quite excited about it. We had some bumps in the road with Fantasy last year and are explicitly working to address them - from building a stronger relationship with the event lead to providing superior terrain (here's some sneak photos of some building designs for this year's event: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XaiBt4KLMps/UeLMQhLkzoI/AAAAAAAAFwg/T8QivvMbvuo/s1600/Painting+4.JPG)

The scoring system will be streamlined to a more traditional one to the average Fantasy GT goer, participation will contribute to Master's Qualification, and we're starting with an initial offering of 32 players (though Steve thinks we'll end up firing up to 64). More information can be found on the website, and Steve should have a primer for us to pop up within the next week or two (sorry for the delay on that - we've taken careful time making sure we have just the right lead this year to ensure an awesome experience for our attendees).

Quote:
Hey guys, this is Steve Gant. I am currently putting the primer together for the Warhammer Fantasy tournament. Right now im looking at a rough idea of.....

2800 points
No unit / army / magic restrictions
Victory points scale roughly
1-500 11/9
501-1250 14/6
1251-2000 17/3
2001+ 20/0
there will be a couple secondary bonuses as well

i hope to have it completed by weeks end for Mike and the NOVA staff (sorry we are having a baby right now lol)

once its up i will post a tournament thread dedicated to just the fantasy event and any questions can be posted up there

Quote:
Last but definitely not least, the Fantasy GT is heavily revamped and coming on strong for 2014, with some incredible terrain already being produced and a substantial # of early registrations.

Veteran tourney organizer Steve Gant will be running the event, and has full control over its outcome. He's making specific changes and designs based upon the great feedback we received from 2013 attendees in our survey, and is looking to fill as many as 64 seats for the Fantasy GT.

Moreover, Fantasy is finally adding more than just a GT to the schedule, with a Doubles event for Friday before the GT. Primers for the Fantasy GT and Doubles event will release along with Blood Bowl and Malifaux primers with the 2/15 Newsletter and on the NOVA Open website.

Registration for Fantasy Doubles, Malifaux Events and the BaWSH Bowl at NOVA Open will begin on MARCH FIRST (3/1/14), so keep your eyes peeled.

Quote:
The primers are up and available to read for the fantasy events. Hopefully we get a great turn out again this year. A much more simplified scoring system and a straight forward event provides better games with faster round turnover.

We will have more appropriate terrain for the event and awesome prizes.

The doubles event gives those who are coming for the fantasy tourny a reason to come down earlier and see more of the convention and gives an extra day of gaming

If you sign up for the doubles event but you dont have a partner we can pair you up with others of the same.

Hope to see a lot of new faces this year making it bigger and better than ever and we can grow it to a larger event for next year!!!

Quote:
Steve Gant's been running the fantasy side, answering questions as they come into the novaopen gmail. Now that he's through running delawarr, I'll see if I can get him to post an update. Additionally, check out roadtonova.blogspot.com for pics dating back several months now of the fantasy and other terrain in progress at our build days.

Let me double check on belakor.

Skyblight will likely be undeniable per raw.

Objectives are provided by the NOVA, are indeed infinitely tall to prevent oddities resulting from pre fixed terrain, and are treated purely as invisible markers for los/etc.

Quote:
I apologize for the lack of posting. real life and stuff.

I have been going over a lot of stuff for the fantasy event this year. dont want the same mistakes as last year. we have almost sold out of the 32 player cap and i am very confident we can get to 64 again.

i am currently polishing the primer for a final draft. its a very straight forward approach. simple is best. if anyone has questions in the mean time, just send an email through nova and i will get back to you asap.

i will try to post more on the forums in the future

-gant

no it wasnt, i just had a baby and i just ran a 40k GT with the new missions Brandt and company wrote up for nova this year. time consuming. also it is still months away and we are ahead of last years pace which i played in personally. i think there was around 56 players. this year is a much more simplified rules package. no wonky LoS chart and all, just a very straight forward battle points based tournament.

the primer isnt going to change too much from what it is now with the exception of chaos dwarves being allowed. as i said before, any questions just ask

Quote:
there was a pole done after last year. 90% was negative comments. just feeding off of those. no changes to the main rules like last year. very simple scoring system.

Hope it helps

I played the Fantasy GT in 2012. It was Not Great. But last year was, from all accounts, a whole lot worse, despite having a much better turn out. NOVA does take the feedback in the post-NOVA poll very seriously and it sounds like they've been pretty proactive about overhauling on it.

In their newsletter, they said that Comics & Gaming Culpeper is providing the prize support for Fantasy (and 4ok). That, and a change at the helm, is a big improvement over last year.

If I wasn't already playing 40k, I would give it another chance. But the lure of my Space Wolves running with an Imperial Knight was too much for me to say no.

Sign up for their newsletter, if you don't get it already. It's once a month and has a LOT of info about the overall stuff and individual events.

I am likely to attend (it's local, after all!); however, they need to clean up some very obvious 'discrepancies' and the lack of that clean up suggests that a lot of bubble-gum and duct tape will go into holding this thing together -- which is fine as long as participants go into it with eyes wide open.

Case in point: "...participation will contribute to Master's Qualification..."

erh... NOT ACCORDING to the Master's officials!!

Quote:

We have made two changes to the 2014 tournament qualifying rules.
...
2. We have removed the NOVA Open from our list of Mid-Atlantic Grand Tournaments. At the current time, we do not believe that NOVA fits in with the rest of our tournament circuit. ... any player who has already purchased a ticket to NOVA (as of April 7, 2014), and can prove via screenshot their ticket purchase by that date, can use NOVA as an in-region GT ... The winner of NOVA will not receive an automatic invite to the MA Masters, even if they are treating it as their in-region GT.

Please send NOVA ticket screenshots and any questions or comments to bullcitywargaming@gmail.com.

I'm going to Nova so I can dominate the tournament just to throw my round 5 game against Gene so he can boost his score and be our first Casual Gaming Legion Member to qualify for the Mid Atlantic Masters Circuit.

Sound fun, count me in. Ill see if I can schedule a grudgematch with Gene and give him a massive points swing.

Anyone for a Doubles team? I would put together a 1200 melee-heavy WoC list and would look for some ranged/magic to augment

Do we have to submit lists for NOVA? I couldn't find anything about it in the player pack. Gene seemed to think we did...

Not sure about the list thing. Guess we should send and email questioning it.

I signed up for fantasy as well. Declined the Olympic thing not knowing what it was and if anyone else was doing it.
