What do you guys think, are we going to try to put on a 2-day tourney this year?

If so we need to start getting some ideas together.

I say we do a couple 1 day events to practice and iron out the new rules for us to have a nice 2 day event. I want to do one in Culpeper to help this new store owner out and to convert the AoS guys here. I'd like to do one at Huzzah as well. I'm still leaning on the idea of the big event in Martinsburg like last year.

How about a 40K event? I have some ideas for a campaign tournament, where you have to check for supplies and casualty recovery between rounds. I think it will add an interesting dimension.

While I am not a 40K fan, If you don't mind, I would love to see the details you have for this!

If adaptable, I could see us running it over a few weeks rather than all at once.

I don't have anything solid yet, but I'll write something up and post it in the next few days. The basic concept is that you roll to recover casualties, repair vehicles, and heal mutli-wound models between each game. The rolls needed will depend on the Role of the unit in question. I'll designate medical and repair units for each faction, and having these in your army will grant bonuses to the recovery rolls. You'll also get a bonus for winning the round. I may also come up with army-specific special rules that will grant bonuses to the rolls for certain units.

The idea is that this will make players think about conserving their forces like real commanders, rather than throwing them into the fray without thought for the battles to come. Also, I'm not intending to go for "balance." Balance is an elusive and subjective concept that has driven better minds than mine quite mad, so I'm going for pure fluffy fun.

Just because I don't like 40K, doesn't mean that it is banned from the CGL. Wink You write it up in a format that can fit in 1 day practice events and a 2 day tournament format, and I'll run it admin-wise along with our 9th Age events until both can fill the house out individually. Very Happy

I think something fluffy for 40k would be great for a small event. 40 k can be quite daunting now in a competitive setting for those just getting into the hobby. I am old school. I think super heavies are great, but for me it has always been about the infantry.

Ok, here's what I came up with for a Campaign Tournament. Let me know what you think.

Campaign Tournament
What makes this tournament different is that casualties may or may be back in action by the next round. Also, players have the option of attempting a withdrawal if they don’t think they can win.

Missions
Random, straight out of the book. TO rolls up the mission, and everybody plays that mission.

Casualty Recovery
At the end of every round, roll a die for every model lost as a casualty. For multi-wound or multi-hull-point models, roll one die for every wound/hull point lost. Each successful roll restores a wound/hull point to the model. The roll needed depends on the model’s combat role.

Even if a model does not recover this round, you can continue to roll for them on subsequent rounds. This represents the time it takes to recover from injuries and/or reinforcements coming to the front.

Combat Role - Recovery Roll
HQ 5+
Troops 4+
Elites 5+
Fast Attack 5+
Heavy Support 5+

Modifiers
Won the Round: +1
At least half of your models are still Combat Active (not casualties, not falling back) at the end of the game: +1
Medical Unit in the army and not lost as a casualty: +1 for Infantry, Jump Infantry, Cavalry, Bikes, Monstrous/Gargantuan Creatures
Repair Unit in the army and not lost as a casualty: +1 for Vehicles/Super Heavy Vehicles

Tactical Withdrawal
At the beginning of your Movement Phases, before any other effects happen, if your Warlord is still alive and not falling back or locked in combat, you may attempt a Tactical Withdrawal. Make a LD test for your Warlord. If successful, you ask your opponent if they’ll let you withdraw. If your opponent agrees, all of your units that aren’t surrounded (as defined in the close combat rules), leave the table, and you forfeit the game. Any units that are surrounded are lost as casualties; they’re either killed or taken prisoner by the enemy.

If your opponent does not allow the withdrawal, the game continues, but you’re now engaged in a Fighting Withdrawal. Your units may still withdraw, but it’ll be harder because you’re under fire. Any of your units that make it to your board edge may quit the field. Once a unit has quit the field, it cannot return. At the end of the game, any models that have quit the field are counted as Combat Active (see above) for determining casualty recovery.

During a Fighting Withdrawal, you can still take objectives, score points on Tactical Objective cards, etc. So, it’s possible - not likely, but possible - that you can still end up winning the game, even in the middle of a Fighting Withdrawal.

Repair: Techmarine

Astra Militarum and Militarum Tempestus
Medical: Medic
Repair: Techpriest Engineseer

Adeptus Mechanicus
Medical and Repair: Techpriest Dominus and/or Cybernetica Datasmith

Adepta Sororitas
Medical: Priest and/or Celestine
Repair: Canoness and/or Celestine

Grey Knights
Medical: Librarian
Repair: Techmarine

Imperial Knights
Repair: Any Knight

Inquisition
Medical: Priests
Repair: Servitors

Daemons/Khorne Daemonkin
Greater Demons and Heralds act as both Medical and Repair units for units associated with the same god. Undivided units count as associated with all gods.

Chaos Space Marines
Medical: Sorcerer, or any character with psychic powers
Repair: Warpsmith

Dark Eldar
Medical: Haemonculus
Repair: Haemonculus

Eldar
Medical: Farseer and/or Warlock
Repair: Farseer and/or Warlock

Harlequins
Medical: Shadowseer
Repair: Shadowseer

Necrons
Medical: Canoptek Spyder and/or Cryptek

Orks
Medical: Pain Boy
Repair: Mek

Tau
Medical: Ethereal

USRs
Any unit with Regeneration and/or It Will Not Die counts as being tended to by a medical or repair unit, even if one is not present. The bonuses do not stack.

My questions are:

1. How many games per event is this best suited for?
2. How are points calculated for tournament results for the Tactical Withdrawal?
3. Are the recovery rolls to good for a tournament setting?

I know nothing about 40K, so these may be answered with normal game rules, but they would be my questions from an admin point of view.

It sounds like you have put a lot of time and thought into creating a narrative which I love. However, if we hold an event in Culpeper I would recommend something simple and straightforward at first. Most of the players in this area have never played in a tournament.
In the current meta of 40k these poor guys will get absolutely crushed. It should be a simple
single combined arms, no super heavies or gargantuan, and only two fliers. This will make it simple and fun and bring people back for more. If we get return players we can start to introduce narrative and bringing it more into the current meta. Again this scene is in its infancy and should be treated as such.

How about October 28-30?

Were we going back to WVa or a different venue? If we are doing a hotel, then the Culpeper Holiday Inn has conference rooms cheap. It is an hour and a half closer for the NC crowd. Wink

Yeah, I'm not thinking Huzzah is good for a 2 day'er. Definitely do a 1 day event there soon; like I said, I want to do one there and one at Culpeper leading up to our event.

I sent an email to some people to see how we can better promote this, if possible. Fingers crossed.

We need to set up a place to have it before promoting it right?

I do see all the action and players (except for a few people) are from the south. I did like the West Virginia store better for a tournament setup than most places around here we play in and we didn't even tap into the large overhead screen and the likes for posting match ups.

That said, I think the more south we go the better for a larger tournament, 7 hours is a bit long of a drive for a 2 days tourney to me. Closer we get to those SC & NC boys the larger number of players. Problem would be cost for the venue, tables, table tops and terrain to make it a really nice event to help with repeat players for the next year. Could be part of our promotions..."new table tops, new terrain" blah, blah, blah. Also calling it "2nd annual" tournament will help as well I think.

What was the place we went to a few times that was at a club of some sort, had an outdoor area with picnic tables but was all under cover? Think maybe Scooter ran it or his club did. If we had an area like that it would be fun. And October would be cool enough for outdoors and maybe not too bad on outdoor bugs too and would make a different venue for most people, and also may keep the cost down quite a bit as well. Probably would allow alcohol too Wink

Another option is renting a large pavilion set up at a park area. Some of those beefy pavilions could fit a gt under them.
