The Toys for Tots Charity WHFB tournament is going to be held at the Game Parlor in Chantilly, Virginia.
Currently planning: Dec. 3, start at 11, end approx. 9
Three games, 2400 point armies. Expect the unexpected.
Monsters from SoM may comprise 25% of your army! Woo hoo! (Only monsters, no characters, though all possible upgrades are available. No binding scrolls are required, no monster reaction tests are needed. No characters may join SOM units. General's leadership may be used, but no BSB rerolls are allowed for a SOM unit under any circumstances.)
Banned: Teclis, Thorek, Kairos, Sacrificial Dagger, Focused Rumination, and the Book of Hoeth.
Minimal paiting impact on overall score. Objective scored separately.
Must bring an objective on 40x40 or 50x50.
Composition will be scored on a thematic/interesting basis. Minimal score impact.
No pitched battles, VP will be irrelevant.
Trophies planned for overall, best general, possibly something else.
Prizes for overall, best general, and most donations.
Sportsmanship may or may not be included in score.
There will be a silent auction with items donated by players and others. Bidding will end at the scheduled end of round 3. I'd like a volunteer to assist with that aspect.
Bring a toy (at least $10 street value) or $15 cash for registration fee. Registration earns you a multi-dice reroll token. Additional donations (of toys, cash, or auction items) will earn single-die reroll tokens in $20 intervals (max of 6) - for auction items, I'll use my best guess as to the proceeds. Special prize for biggest donor after the auction is concluded and values calculated (the buy-in toy donation not included here.)
Limit of 20 people. Although we are close to that, I am not going to ask for pre-registration fees. We should be able to accomodate everyone.
Terrain and mats would be very helpful - I'll only be able to handle about half.
REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED
(I am hoping for no-shows, at this point)

Had a random thought for comment. I remember the old days when you could take monsters as allies using the allied contingent rules, with a max of 25% in that slot.
With Storm of Magic out, would it be OK to allow monstrous allies or are the rules/point costs out of whack for those things? Remember that we're not playing a typical pitched battle here. I'd propose that your army can be split into a monstrous contingent of no greater than 600 points, with the remainder of the unused portion being subject to the typical limitations (for example 25% rare points max based on the standard list portion only, not the full 2500.)
If I do this, should all standard SoM monster rules apply? I think there is something in there about unridden monsters... _________________ There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.

First of all, I'm in!! (got wife's permission and everything).
Second, regarding monsters from the Storm of Magic (SoM), I've never played SOM, but I've seen several battle reports on YouTube (yes, pathetic I know). They tend to show armies having their regular 2500 pt armies, and then just allowing X number of points (somewhere between 10% and 25% of the total army size) in additional monsters from the Storm of Magic book. No need to do anything special. The games seems pretty balance to me. That is assuming I understood your post correctly.
Because I've never played SoM (and given that I don't have any monsters) 625 points in monsters seems a little much. Especially, since I seem to recall that the 25% additional in the SOM games could be used for monsters, summoned undead or deamons or hyper-powerful magic items.
My suggestion would be maybe limiting the amount of points in monsters to 20% (500 points) or something like that. Then any remainder can be applied to the army as you suggest in your post. You may want to think about whether you want to require at least one monster per army, because some people may just prefer to take the extra points in regular troops.
Ah, and one last suggestion! I like the idea of making the $10+ dollar toy part of the registration. You could also give players tokens for each additional $10+ toy they bring increasing logarithmically. E.g.
1 $10+ toy = 1 token (value = $10)
1 $10+ toy + 1 $20+toy = 2 tokens (total value = $30+)
1 $10+ toy + 1 $20+toy + 1 $30+ toy = 3 tokens (total value $60+)
Each tokens could then be used to reroll a single die (or entire roll if you want to get crazy) during the event. I heard something similar to this this mentioned on an episode of the D6Generation pod-cast. Just throwing it out there as a suggestion.
... now.. looks like I am going to need to get me some monsters! _________________ All hail, WARHAMMER is Dead. Long live WARHAMMER! |

Thanks for the suggestions, Eric.
I like the token idea for more/better toys. We'd have to decide how to implement - I'd hate to ask people to bring receipts, but I think honor system should suffice. I'd want to limit the max tokens to 3, though, with only 1 per game being allowed.
I'm not sure if a monster requirement would be good or no. I don't have the SoM book, and don't plan to get one. I'd hate to force that purchase on the players. I suspect that in my scenarios, taking monsters shouldn't give any real benefit over regular troopers unless I decide to make special rules to increase their potential. So, I am inclined to allow them, for the fun of it, but probably won't require them unless I get a lot of feedback in favor. If they are mandatory, they will get bonuses almost certainly.
Keep the comments coming.

I am thinking I am in too. How about using the tokens for a re-roll? Leadership, maybe for the magic pool or even a single characters attacks or some such _________________ Joey

I had been thinking everyone gets a token for showing up, with potential for up to 2 extra for bigger/more gifts.
If each token is good for a single die roll, then I don't worry that it'll be completely unfair for people who can't afford to splurge on a toy costing more than $10... However, if the token allows a reroll of an entire handful of dice, then that's too potent for anyone to get more than one.
Perhaps one multi-roll-token for registering, then up to 3 other single-die tokens for more toys (or for donating items in the silent auction?) _________________ There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.

First, I like the token idea as it is similar to what we do at charity golf tournies. You buy string, buy mulligans, etc. To keep it simple and to make sure we get the same dollar for dollar return from your company, have the tokens be a purchased item. The toy gets you in, and then the tokens are a donation award.
Second, I absolutely like the idea of allowing SoM units in the list. Also to keep it simple just make the points for your army 2800 pts and you can get up to 25% of your army as SoM units. This way it's not 2500 plus 500 +, but 2800 total. This way those that want to bring other units can, those that want to bring SoM units can, and it's easier to keep track of. With 8th edition rules, it doesn't take much longer to play 2800 than 2500. With games not going off of VP's, the games may go by super quick anyway. _________________ Thanks,

I am game!
I'm totally in favor of using the SoM units. Maybe have them count as Rares or something? Mostly, I love the Cockatrice model. |

I figured it was a long shot, but asked GW if they could support a charity tournament. I think I got the canned response...
Quote: | Thank you for writing to us with your inquiry. Your tournament/event sounds absolutely awesome!
Currently, with the volume of requests that we receive in regards to support we do not have the resources to meet all requests. Although Games Workshop does not sponsor or endorse any events, we do have an official GW Tournament Circuit that we support. |

Go to GW Fair Oaks; explain the event to the manager there and see if the store wants to do something.
Alternatively, the store should be able to ping back to their sales rep and get support this way. It's GP, which means that's a no-go, but if we were doing this at GV, for example, Kathy'd be able to get us support.
They absolutely _do_ provide support to this sort of thing, but they don't know who the crap you are, so they're not going to just ship stuff out to random people who e-mail them asking for free stuff. _________________ Rush - Warpstone Pile

I actually thought I'd get a bit more than a canned response, since my email to them was quite lengthy, explaining the history of our Toys for Tots events and how much we have raised for charity in the past and making direct reference to the IFL's support of Game Day events.
Yeah, I used to be a trade account manager at GW, so I at least know how things *used* to work. If GPC was a regular trade account in good standing, we would have supported this event very generously. However, I'm sure that GW policy has changed a lot, and I'm pretty sure GPC doesn't order direct anyway.
I'll still head over to GW Fair Oaks with flyers and have a discussion with the manager. It's worth another shot. _________________ There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.

I dont think the Manager at Fair oaks can help much.
GW has discontinued it's support of many things... They no longer do black boxes, or much of anything... _________________ Kevin C

I talked to Eric a bit in tells, I'll be sending down some prizes for the tournament. Expect two prizes that will be better than what you get at 'ardboyz regionals for 2nd or 3rd, and a lot less than if you won first.)
If you go ahead with the plan to buy re-rolls, I'll toss in something for the guy that buys the most re-rolls as well.
Crossposted the event to the Showcase Forums and taunted the boyz over on Scooters forum.
