Desolation of Solland, Winter 2014

When against earth a wooden heel
Clicks as loud as stone on steel,
When stone turns flour instead of flakes,
And frost bakes clay as fire bakes,
When the hard-bitten fields at last
Crack like iron flawed in the cast,
When the world is wicked and cross and old,
I long to be quit of the cruel cold.

Little birds like bubbles of glass
Fly to other nests,
Birds as bright as sparkles of wine
Fly in the nite to Estalian roosts,
Birds of azure and flame-birds go
To the warm Karibbean Sea:
They chase the sun, they follow the heat,
It is sweet in their bones, O sweet, sweet, sweet!
It's not with them that I'd love to be,
But under the roots of the balsam tree.

Just as the spiniest chestnut-burr
Is lined within with the finest fur,
So the stony-walled, snow-roofed house
Of every squirrel and mole and mouse
Is lined with thistledown, sea-gull's feather,
Velvet mullein-leaf, heaped together
With balsam and juniper, dry and curled,
Sweeter than anything else in the world.

O what a warm and darksome nest
Where the wildest things are hidden to rest!
It's there that I'd love to lie and sleep,
Soft, soft, soft, and deep, deep, deep!

Welcome one and all to the next Warhammer Tournament at Your Hobby Place! Following last years trend into this year, we are continuing to offer an evocative set of themed tournaments that hopefully offer more than just your standard line em up and cast spells type battles!

Enter WINTER WAKE 2014, a tournament that is going to be a slight variation on what we usually do. Based on polling I did this past weekend at the shop. it seems folks want smaller games that can be completed in two hours or less, so that the tourney doesn't drag into the wee hours of the night. Your voices have been heard!

Winter Wake

Where: Your Hobby Place, Martinsburg WV
When: February 22nd at Your Hobby Place
Time: 12pm Check In, 1230 Start Time
Army Size: 1500 points. YES, 1500 points!
Admission: $5
Lunch: Not included but we were thinking of pooling resources (read as cash, mullah, money, dinars, dinero) for some sort of deliverable food from the gamer four basic food groups: Salt, Sugar, Caffeine & Carbs! To be eaten between Round Two and Three.
Pub Quiz: Something old, something fun, something to do while we eat lunch! Person that answers the most answers correctly will receive a bonus in Round Three. Part written, (as in the old days) part oral. Yeah, I went there.

Each of the three games will be played on winter themed boards which offer some tactical nuisances based in conjunction with the terrain and scenarios. You MAY NOT move terrain or alter any scenario rules once assigned to your table.

So you can plan your armies in advance, each round will be played with the following scenarios:

Round One: Meeting Engagement
Round Two: Battle Lines
Round Three: Dawn Attack

Games will be played with a 2 hour time limit. We will be using a timer and stopping at the appointed time break. If you don't have time to start another complete turn, THEN DONT START A NEW ONE. Games will end on the last turn before the turn break, though both players will be able to complete that turn. Word to the wise, don't drag your feet!

By using less points set up times will be reduced & players are going to have to adjust their usual comfort lists as a great many choices will have to be made with less points. But that is the charm of such an event, I fully expect to see a lot more cunning and tactics, since safety valves will likely be gone and minor mistakes in a 2500 point game can be magnified big time in a 1500 point one!

Prizes will be rewarded to the players as follows:
Overall Winner (combined painting, sportsmanship and games)
Runner Up (combined painting, sportsmanship and games)
Best Painted Army (voted by fellow players & Dave)
Best Sportsmanship (voted by fellow players)
Wooden Spoon (worst luck despite noble effort)

Any questions, please post them here! We hope to see you on the 22nd!

Da Kaptain

Awww Man! I was actually thinking of going to this when I saw the title as the wife will be out of town....but I don't travel for less than 2250. Crying or Very sad

Yeah, that's my excuse...not poor tactics or list or anything. Razz

We had a great turnout, 11 players in all (if only we had that elusive 12th man...) and were able to get I three quality rounds of action along with the Pub & Grub quiz! I think this is the smoothest run tourney I have had the privilege of hosting and hope to do more in the future. We started on time, games ran like clockwork and we finished by 730 which is what we had planned. Awesome. Now on to the results:

Overall Winner of Winter Wake 2014: Ray (High Elves)
Runner Up: Andrew (Warriors of Chaos)
Best Appearance: John (Ogre Kingdoms)
Best Sportsmanship: Mr. E (Lizardmen)
Wooden Spoon: Thomas (Lizardmen)

Is it me or is Thomas winning an award at every tourney of late? Wink

I really wanted to say that it was a joy to see so many folks with their painted armies! I know especially that John, Chris, Pete and Andrew worked very hard these past weeks to get new armies painted or complete their existing ones. And it showed, it was a joy to be able to grade them on their work and while only one person can get the award, I think all of these guys deserve a round of applause. Great work!

A few revelations from the tourney.

#1 I liked the Appearance and Quiz scoring and will make sure that I refine and use these in the future.

#2 I would like to see if, as a group, we can come up with some sort of basic rules for the tournaments that are run, be it consistency in game scores, etc.

#3 If we have an odd player in future tourneys (meaning an extra player as we are all odd in our own ways!) then I found using an average score is the best way to proceed. A different person each round would have to sit out but receive an average score from the round based on battle and sportsmanship scores. By way of example Pete sat out the first round. The average battle scores for the round was 13 and the sportsmanship was 3 so he received 16 points. This really seems to be the best way, imo, to ensure that just because we don't have even players, the person receiving the bye wont be knocked out of contention. Would like to hear thoughts on this!

In closing, be on the lookout for Aprils tournament, we are going to try something a little different, a Doubles Tourney. Details will be posted soon so check back into the forums and start thinking of a partner!
