Teclis went 1 - 2 for the day.

I had a blast everyone, thanks to Ben for running the event, and thanks to the group for making the day a great time.

I will have my iPad so I will post when I can.

Thanks again for everyone who came out and made this a grand "semi-retirement" event for Bill. It was a great success and I enjoyed the day. I'm looking forward to putting on another event in the near future. I'll make sure to take pictures and such on the next one.

Congrats to the Rat Pack for coming out and putting on a "schooling". Harry took top honours with his Skaven and Rich followed close behind with his minions from Skavenblight. The event was scheduled to only have the two top spots rewarded, but due to the success of the event I added Best General to the honours based purely on Battle Points. So congrats to Jamie Hunt for having the next best Generalship behind the Rat pack.

Results will be posted soon. Very Happy

I really like doing these things, so while its still fresh in our minds, could you guys let me know what you liked or disliked about the event? I got some good feedback from the guys that went to Hooters, but here's a chance for those that couldn't make it. I'll keep the feedback and ideas you guys have to prepare for the next one.

Was the points limit ok? Higher or Lower next time?
Addition of Storm of Magic good or bad?
Mulligans...good or bad?
Bonus Cards...good or bad?
etc etc

Also, I'm going to take the "sticky" tag off of this topic since the event has passed. Smile

Mulligans and bonus cards were good and at times either very funny to watch or tactically important to the game. I didn't like two things:

1. Last scenario, rolling at the beginning of turn 5 to end it. I'd prefer to play if there is time left.

2. Rolling dice and giving them away or earning them back AND also spinning the wheel. Generally if its your turn, you'll have more power dice and a greater opportunity to lose them. Also, the possibility that your Lore comes up is pretty unlikely, so not only will you lose dice, but your oppoinent has +2 to dispel. I would say do either, but not both.

I liked everything else though and allowing SoM critters was fun. I don't have creatures or shooting normally, so having a hydra was a good time. Although, I might change to a cockatrice after Casey's luck Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks again for putting this together, I had a blast.

-James

I liked everything but the spin on the wheel.
I especially liked the chance to prove Ben correct

I had a great time! Thanks for running it!

A couple of thoughts:

- Scenarios were pretty solid.
- The scenario / map change-ups tripped me up a bit. Stupid reading comprehension.
- As James said, Scenario 3's about reducing magic, not boosting it. That's fine, so long as it's the intent.
- I like the 50% points for units under 25%. Wouldn't mind seeing it more (as a sometimes food).
- Jesus, the heat. I'm putting a thermometer on our section of the board next time I'm in the store.
- Need to update the templates: CGL RTT FTW
- I'd like a % of Scrolls of Binding to be a/the standard. More flexibility for fun, goofy stuff... but not too much.

Fantastic event! Thanks Ben for putting on an outstanding event.

Overall, I would happily play the event again, exactly as is, no questions. However, in the interest of constructive feedback, I have a few additional ideas/thoughts below:

- I enjoyed the first two scenarios a great deal, which were nice tweaks to the general scenarios. They were colorful and provided some great variety. I especially like that you used the different deployment maps, which I think mixed it up a bit.
- The third scenario I was not a thrilled with, however that may be more a result of army I had (dwarfs). Also, if the goal of the special rule was to tone down the magic phase, I am not sure that it necessarily accomplished that. In addition, the -1 inch movement penalty was giving my poor dwarfs flashbacks to 7th edition movements.
- There was a lot of text with each of the scenarios, which added to the time pressure. I would suggest either not quite as many special conditions/rules, or perhaps have people send in their lists a couple of days before the event. Once you receive the army list, you send them the scenarios so that we can read them before the match.
- Kudos for including page numbers with the scenario descriptions. That was a great help!
- I liked the cards and the mulligans, however, I almost felt like there were too many mulligans. I am not sure that I would put a hard limit, but perhaps increase the costs relative to the number of re-rolls purchased (e.g., $5 for the first 3 re-rolls, $8 for the next 3, $15 for the next 3, etc...)
- I really enjoyed the 25% SoM creatures. I think it adds great variety and further differentiates the various armies.
- Personally I prefer close lists, but I do not have a strong preference either way.

These next items are just overall suggestions. They could be applied to this tournament or any future tournament:

- Escalation tournament. Round 1 is a 1200 point list, round 2 could be 2000 points, and round 3 2800. Round 1 could be a warband scenario, round 2 could involve rescuing your SoM monster/pet, and round 3 is the full up army. Another nice side effect of a smaller game up front is that we always feel crunched for time. A 1200 point game could probably be done comfortably in less than 2 hours, leaving more time for the 2nd and 3rd games.
- More terrain. One of my favorite things about 8th edition is that terrain is present, but doesn't necessarily destroy an army (e.g., remember dwarfs trying to march through a woods). I would like to see 7 to 10 pieces per table (e.g., fences, rivers, impassible, etc).
- This may require a little bit of planning, but a tournament where the forces of order are fighting the a forces of destruction tournament would be interesting. It would also require equal players for both sides. The prize is then shared among the entire team (order or destruction).

I wanted to comment on these two points:
- I like the idea of capping / escalating the cost for rerolls.

- I'm all the way against closed lists, but even with closed lists, I think a serious effort towards making Scroll of Binding choice rules available to your opponent is key.

Not everyone has SoM, fewer people have MA/Tamurkhan, and even fewer people will have paid for access to the iBook store Scrolls of Binding. If you're going to play closed list (which is, to my prejudiced mind, all about shouting "GOTCHA!"), it should be about outthinking your opponent's understanding of your (readily avaialble) army book... not abusing their ignorance of some random piece of Forgeworld ephemera.

Not to suggest that I had any problems with it (I didn't), but I think if you go closed, it becomes more problematic.

The -1 movement was a little ridiculous. Tomb kings can't march so my infantry move 3 inches per turn. IF, and only IF I can some how manage to get the movement spell off I would then be able to move them another 3 inches... Ouch.

Maybe you could do some sort of blizzard table where every game turn you roll (or spin) and it could effect movement (-1 movement thing), magic (casting modifier), or shooting (like the phas protection spell for the whole battle field).

None the less, I very much enjoyed the event. I also liked Eric's idea of a tournament with different point value games. I got tired by the third game, haha. To much warhammer the week before I guess.

I'm not a fan of true open or closed lists. I don't want to see the army list at the beginning of the game as it (to me) takes away from the strategy/surprise of both players. But at the same time, if I have a question, I want to make sure that I'm not being cheated. (strong word, but you get the picture) Wink

Thanks guys for the feedback. The last scenario was an Ode to Bill and his surgery. All of the scenarios were a quilt-work from other scenarios past and present. I did get wordy on the descriptions, but I wanted them to come across clear and not confusing. Need to work on that. I edited them over and over at home to make sure things were clear, and on game day I still found some grey areas. Rolling Eyes Stupid lore of Metal.

I don't like for people to have the scenarios beforehand, as they will tailor their lists for the scenarios and ruin the fun for other players who have a different "style" of play. But I do recognize the importance of being able to have the time to digest a "complicated" scenario. The trading of lists for scenarios is a good idea and I'll use that next time.

I had used the cards in the past with success so I, too, like them. The Mulligans were something new that I had only heard about. From what I saw, they really only added entertainment (and prize money...Harry thanks you). In golf tournaments that I've been in, you can buy as many as you want, hence my inspiration. I think I'll use them again in events that I do and I'll look at a way to regulate them.

Because I didn't ban Teclis or Kairos, I thought that the flux scenario could help out somebody from getting trashed by magic. But I didn't want to tip the scale all the way over, either. I'm all about if I bought something, I want to use it, hence the spinner addition. I should have posted up a request for those with it to bring it, but I think all tables were covered. I'll remember that. I've noticed from playing Dwarfs and seeing them in action, they are a little too powerful in the magic phase, only because of the book overlap. In the next event, they will be hobbled just a bit, so getting your opponent's dice on ones will be a little more advantagous, just like other armies. Wink

I apologize, as I didn't catch the "IFL" on the packets until AFTER I printed them all off. The wife said don't waste paper. Embarassed If I can get the Eagle image off of this forum, I'd put that on the cards in place of the Iron Fist. Very Happy

We have NOVA coming up, Blob's in September, Bill's Dragon Wars Halloween......so what about a Food Bank or Toys for Tots Tourney mid December?

I'm all for a food bank tournament. I volunteer doing food delivery and giving food out at a pantry and yeah, things are really tight for a lot of people and a canned food drive / charity tournament for that would be really rad.
