Spoilers for the next book have been online for a few days now.

I read them because I'm the type to spoil stuff for myself but the book sounds pretty awful.

I'll probably pick it up and read it because I'm a big time sucker, but man I have no hope for the series now.

Apparently some EU branches of Amazon started shipping it early.

I'm looking forward to it. We're going on a long trip late July, so I'll have a lot of time to read. It'll be this, then some assorted Joe Abercrombie books (though The First Law's not going to last before the trip) and McNeill's Sigmar stuff. That should cover me. Worse comes to worse, it's about time to reread Anathem, anyway.

I was talking with a friend of mine at work. She had a pretty intriguing theory that Jon Snow is not actually Stark's son, but is actually Robert Baratheon's son likely with Ned's sister.

If its Ned's sister... then Jon is a noble trueborn and would have first claim to the throne over Joffrey (won't spoil THAT tidbit) or even Stannis. Jon looks a little like Stark, but probably gets that from Ned's sister. He's got dark hair like Baratheon.... anyway its an intriguing idea.

Now add Dany... and maybe Lord Snow and Dany unite the realms through some marriage. Dunno. Just a wild ass thought.

The common theory (based on "the Tower of Joy sequence" that I don't remember from any of my reads, but folks keep bringing up) is that Jon is actually Rhaegar and Lyanna's son, which gets to you kind of the same place but with him as a Targaryen.

That's what I always figured, Rush.

Furthermore I always figured that the first three books would be this awesome series of political intrigue set in a Fantasy world. I liked those books. I was always afraid the rest of the series would be Jon and Dany reuniting, sexing each other up, and riding dragons with Tyrion as they fought zombies or something. I don't read books with dragons on the cover and am really leery of where the series is going.

I'll still read it, though, even though I've spoiled the newest book for me. I hope it reads better than the detailed synopsis I read.

I never heard that.... but it makes alot of sense. In the book they allude to Lyanna being raped by Targaryens... but it always seemed liked bluster and anger by Baratheon.

Could be Lyanna had a thing for Rhaegar.... even tho she was betrothed to Robert. Hell, maybe Robert, in his rage, killed her. He slapped Cersei around enough. And if she was carrying Rhaegar's baby and Robert knew, then he'd be pretty pissed.

From what I remember, Rhaegar was always described as being attractive and very popular with the ladies. It made sense that Lyanna, who had spent a lot of time near Rhaegar, would fall in love with him.

I always figured she gave birth to Jon and before dying made Ned promise to never reveal that Jon was the son of Rhaegar. Ned, being a one dimensional character, kept his word and never even told his wife about it because he's that awful and honorable and one dimensional.

That's one of the reasons I was excited about the show. Ned has fever dreams about the Tower of Joy and I was hoping the show would dramatize all that so that fans of the book could get something out of the show that was new or interesting.

Since this is a spoiler for the new book I'll make sure I say as much.

SPOILEREveryone turns out to be a Targeryan!SPOILER

So, yeah, good times!

I am almost done with my somewhat yearly read of Moby Dick and I think afterwards I'll finally get around to reading Aksyonov's Generations of Winter since I have a friend who has been telling me to read it for years now. After that I will probably read A Dance of/for/with Dragons.

The books are my favorite. I highly recomend them, though they start even more slowly than the series, with even more characters in more places, but it all leads up to a better story in the end.

By the last book in the series, it becomes pure win.
