Yep! Ashley and I will be there. Richard, too.

I thought you turned in your army list when you showed up? Could be wrong, though.

I'll be there as well! I am taking Friday off from work so that I can see the vendors and perhaps attend a few of the painting classes as well.

I should have skipped Friday work as well, that would have been for many reasons Laughing

Are you taking your Dwarves with that sweet ass Gyrocopter?

Yup! It is far from an optimal list (some might even question if it is competitive), but I decided to bring them for one last hurrah! I think after NOVA I am going to shelve my dwarfs for 12 months to play with my Orcs & Goblins and to work on a couple of other projects.

I spent the day checking out the vendors and looking at some of the 40K armies. Two things that I notices right away. (1) There was some absolutely incredibly painted armies among those that I saw, and (2) I saw a LOT of Necrons. I don't even play 40K and I swear everywhere I looked I saw the very distinctive 1/2 moon Necron flyers.

Good luck to everyone!

Cheers!!!

I ended @3&2. 4 great opponent and 1 not too fun.
Tough lists from my opponents, which should be expected at a large tournament.
Rd 1 high elves w/lvl 4 book of hoeth and tons of sea guard = 10 pt victory
Rd2 high elves w/ dragon princes and large wht lion unit = 12 pt victory (argued rules all the way, and wrong all the time. We play a person like this once in a while)
Rd 3 vs Dwarves Same list Eric mentioned in the next post = 8 pts loss
Rd 4 vs Ogres w/standard Ogre list 16 pt victory
Rd 5 vs empire (Eric Frye) 6 pt loss

In terms of the battles, I went 2 wins and three losses. Both wins were against Orcs & Goblins and two of the three losses were against Ogers and the third (which I lost by only 97 points) was against a dwarf artillery line. He was the only other dwarf general there and for his army had 2 cannons, 2 grudge throwers, 2 organ guns, a bolt thrower aaster engineer, 2 five man conga lines of hammerers with champs, 10 thunderers and two 20 man blocks of warriors and ... The anvil.

Confused

I was VERY pleased that I kept it to only a 97 point difference with my list.

And my biggest news, I won for best converted mini "miniature Frankenstein" for fantasy, and Rich got best single painted mini!!!!

Yeah CG-L!!!!!!

Yes, it is. I feel a little embarrassed now because I really should have started my earlier post by saying that Ryan (i.e., Ryric) was in fact a really nice guy. I saw his army before I met him and I thought "what person would bring this?" Turns out a really nice guy would. He said that he had been playing Warhammer only about 2 years, and that this was one of (if not is actual) first tournament.

He also mentioned that someone told him that NOVA Open was a real "bring your beat stick" tournament. So he went on to the Bugman Brewery forums and asked for help, and the list he brought was based (at least in part) on the advice that he got.

He also had his wife and 3 year old son in tow and they were so supportive and proud of him, it was actually really, really nice. As we know a spouse that is support of our plastic addition is a special thing. So before we started the match he started asking me all sorts of questions about my army like:

Ryric: "Shields on your Hammerers?"
Azric: "I modeled them that way and like the way they look."
Ryric: ???

He asked similar questions about why quarrellers over thunderers and why slayers over just about anything else and why a gyro. Anyhow, I felt really good about the game afterwards because not only did I keep my losses from an unmitigated hail of artillery fire to within 97 battle points of breaking even, but he also said that he really liked my army list and liked what it could do. And, perhaps most importantly, he said he had a great time. I can honestly said I enjoyed the challenge thinking about how I was going to take on that type of list.

Ryan asked that I comment on his thread on Bugmans, so I have a post that I am going to add to his thread later tonight talking about our game.

So consider this a bit of an open confession. It was only about 6 years ago that I started this hobby. I think that 2 years into it, if I was going to go to what is arguably one of the biggest tournaments in the country and people told me that I was gong to need an artillery list to be competitive, and I didn't have a local game group to talk to and get ideas, I may have done the same thing. I was a little judgmental before I met the owner of the army, and I realized that my preconceived notions were all wrong. So ends the confession.

As for my other games, some highlights.

Game 1: Played the ringer with orcs and goblins. Guy had never actually played O&G before, so it was a little like playing chess against myself. I had to explain to him all the special orc rules and what did what. But he was a great sport and it turned into a really fun game. He even said that he really liked my list and gave me some good advice for the later rounds.

Game 2. Ryan with Dwarfs. You can check out his thread on Bugmans for my impressions of our game. http://www.bugmansbrewery.com/topic/39397-ryrics-artillery-battery-goes-to-the-nova-open-2012-updated/

Game 3. Wes (from "Stiff Neck Studios" - he had an incredibly painted oger army and display board) with Ogers. I am not sure what else I can do, but ogers really are my nemesis. I think the one bright shining spot of the game was when I hit is block of 12 ironguts with his slaughtermaster General with a cannon shot. His general failed his look out sir roll. The cannon ball then continued to go and obliterated each of the four ogers behind him. I was very impressive from where I stood. It looked like with one cannon ball I had parted the red sea! However, he used what was left on the board and took every one of minis off. However, that one shot, plus some little stuff here got me almost 1000 points and kept it to a Major Defeat instead of a out and out massacre.

Game 4. Eric with Ogers (awww s&*t, ogers again?!). This game was even more lop sided, as this person had the Oger Slaughtermaster character. Anyhow, I made the mistake of thinking i could just feed that unit (with the character) my 40 warriors while I focused on the rest of his army. It half worked. The Oger character and the unit of iron guts did in fact eat the 40 warriors, but the other half of the plan which involved getting there rest of his army didn't quite go as planned. My big mistake was that I had gotten my slayers into his two remaining mornfang, after blowing 2 away with a luck organ gun shot. I chose to use the two hand weapons, which along with the frenzy the slayer had (a special rule for the scenario let each general select 3 units with stupidity and frenzy) meant I got 30 attack at WS 4 and S4 on his mornfang calvery. 30 attacks, around 21 hits, and about 11 or 12 wounds. However, S4 mean that his save was a 3 up, and he save all but 1... I really should have gone to great weapons which meant I would have had only 27 instead of 30 attacks, but he would have then been saving on a 4+, which would have had a better chance of getting the unit. I find with the slayers the prevalence of heavy armor is making me rethink which option I should choose.

Game 5 was O&G again against fellow CG-L, Eric McKee. It was a great game honestly and a lot of fun with lots of back and forth. I was convinced around turn 3 or 4 that I was done for. I had one unit surrounded on 3 side, my slayers were dying faster than the orcs and goblins they were fighting... it just looked bad. Then someone came by and looked at the board and asked how it was going. To which I replied, "I got him right where I want him." Anyhow, the very next round I had a very decisive (and lucky) round which allowed me to really push the tide and get a small win in the end. I also did a very un-slayer thing and hid 2 remaining slayers (worth 300+ points) around a building from his general on foot that was looking for revenge for me killing his pet Wyvren. So it was a lucky win to be sure, but I'll take it. (Thanks again Eric for the game!!!)

So 5 solid games. I really enjoyed 4 of the 5 opponents and would love to play them again. The only game that I can't say that I loved was the second Oger player on the second day. He was perfectly nice, but (a) I am tired of getting eaten by ogers, and (2) I just didn't mesh with him as well as the other opponents. I guess I wasn't my normal jovial self because you couldn't swing a dead sabretusk by the tail without hitting an oger, and believe me I tried....dam sabretusks...

So great event, great time and thanks to Ashley, Casey and Rich for saving a seat for me at the awards ceremony.

Very cool!

When do they post the results? I'd like to see how it all stacked up.

As for my Tomb Kings: 3-2

Game 1: Masacred by Skaven. Doom wheels are the doom of large monsters. Luck wasn't with me this game, but poor planning on my part made things go from bad to worse.

Game 2: Minor Loss to Empire. I should have put attacks on his characters and killed the squishy bsb and guy that let him re roll wounds. I also didn't cast Doom and Darkness on the turn I charged my sphinxes into his 9 Demigryph Knights. Lessons learned, enjoyed the game.

Game 3: Minor Victory over Dark Elves. I started thinking a little smarter and used terrain to my advantage. Hydras are tough! Everything in Dark Elves has hatred. Ugh.

Game 4: Minor Victory over Tomb Kings (Khalida with 100 archers.) I thought I was on track for a massacre turn 1. I was trying to snipe the heirophant but the dispel dice and the scroll came out turn 1. I had 3 dice left so I figured what the hell I'll shoot a purple sun at the monsters. Casting goes fine. I roll the dice for the purple suns direction and I misfire on myself... I forgot to scatter d6, my heirophant rolled a 4 and I was rolling crumble every turn of the game. I eventually made it to combat with frenzied chariots, and was able to just pull out the win. We lost track of time so we may have played an extra round so maybe I should have lost this game. Moral of the story, don't shoot out pruple sun unless you really need it!

Game 5: Solid Victory over Lizard men. Great game. Great tactics on both sides. Great painted army, I think he may have won best painted for fantasy. Both of us enjoyed it. I won the game on the bottom of turn 6 breaking a block of soul blighted saurus. Best game of the tournament, and we were last to finish.

I'm still in the lengthy process of regurgitating the weekend.

I had a great time! Three great games, four fun games, one game that honestly could have been much worse, but wasn't great. Nothing to complain about.

Short version:

Game 1 vs Michael Shaefer's Lizardmen - Gorgeous army. Looked like I'd kicked the crap out of him, but he'd taken enough of my stuff out to seriously mitigate things a bit, but I still won. Great game.

Game 2 vs jerk with an all-squig O&G army that I've seen around a couple of times. Smile Some good shots early on and Eric failing half of his Stupidity rolls made it clear that I'd win. Still: I had a great time.

Game 3 vs. Phil Stubbs Warriors of Chaos. I think he won undefeated? It was a balls-hard, dickish list. I made a good handful of tactical errors, though, and I think that if I'd been more on my game by the end of the day, I'd have made it a pretty close game in the end. That said: he was a great guy to play against, and I had a really good time even though he beat the utter [censored] out of me.

Game 4 vs. Brad Close's Daemons of Chaos. Brad and I started quibbling about stuff pretty early, and that's something I've learned I respond to by quibbling about more stuff. It wasn't a bad game, but I'm certainly happier not arguing about rules. I lost, but not by much. If I'd been able to drop his Bloodthirster, things would have been much, much different.

Game 5 vs Wes Cogdal's Ogres. Given that something like 75% of the armies there were Ogres, just one game against them is remarkable. This was probably my favorite game of the day, though: he was a great opponent, with the army that would have won best appearance if he hadn't been a sponsor (Stiff Neck). Lots of back and forth. I made a huge tactical mistake at the VERY end that cost me 237 points and the game. If I'd done things right, I'd have won by 10 points instead. Good times.

I was very pleased with winning the painted mini.

Overall, it was a great weekend.

If you played Michael Schaeffer, he didn't win best painted army: that went to one of the Cobra Kai Ogre players. He did, however, win Best in Show with the painting competition. So, there's that. Smile
