Two of the VC players were already multiple GT winners so they know what they are doing.

Larry took the grave guard horde combo that gets you 2+ hit with great weapons, and I believe Alex did the same thing.
Daemons are still gross, while I wasn't lucky enough to play a daemon army, they obviously did very well.
Was very surprised that there weren't too many gunlines. They obviously made an appearance, however a lot of the tournament vets did not seem to take them.
No Brett players and no Beastman players was a surprise.
Was a fun tournament as always. I personally learned a lot about the elves in 8th. My army did fine, I think I would have gone 3-2-1 if it had not been for a dawn attack scenario against ogres that had me deploy 7 of my 11 drops on my right flank, with my white lions and archmage alone on the left. The ogre army deployed almost everything on his right flank or right leaning center, which meant he could charge my white lions on turn 2 with a unit of 8 iron guts with a bsb and tyrant inside with a slaughter master in the 2nd rank. Oh, and did I mention that that right flank where almost my entire army was deployed was basically blocked in by a large piece of impassable terrain?
Anyways, in competitive play, RBT's will rarely if ever be taken again. In competitive games they are not even close to being worth their points. Your own troops can block their effectiveness (-2 modifiers), large targets can still get a -1 or -2 modifier if hidden behind terrain or troops large enough to block half of their body (not too tough to do, large targets only means they never get modifiers for standing behind obstacles), they don't pierce ranks if they fail to kill the first model, and they are only a T6 2 wound model for 100 points.
Sure, they occasionally do well, but you're paying 200 points for 2, and that many points for some shooting that will occasionally do well, is not worth it compared to the point cost of other troop choices in the high elf army.
Gonna toy around with my magic as well. Need to get more out of the points spent. I only had 2 magic phases in 6 games that went over 6 power dice (natural roll, had a couple games channel 1 to make that 7). Double high magic was a really fun experiment, and it did well when I was able to pressure my opponents dispel pool (which wasn't too often). Double Flames of the phoenix is awesome, curse of arrow is great, and the shield of saphery 5+ ward was a constant nuisance to my opponents. Had a game against WoC that saw 21 marauders die in my first turn to a flames |

Not really
I am surprised that Empire armies didn't do better. _________________ Thanks,

Kelly and I have made a pact to play beast man now, to show you scrubs that they aren't a bad army. Prepare for defeat! |

Some thoughts and grumblings:
Better hotel location that previous Colonials, but less spacious and people were pretty packed in there. I thought the scenarios were completely vanilla and boring, but I did kinda like that 200 points for a win was the only thing worth going for - no need to pile on for a massacre. I think I never got paint-judged, not that it mattered in the least, and even though I did bolt before the final round was completely done that is still a little bothersome.
Sad to say that I was the one daemon player finishing out of the top 10, going an incredible 2-3. Not my fault, for the most part - a couple of those games I was just completely dice-bit, and in another one I I lost my Keeper on turn 1 before I had a chance to move him (I ended up being one bad turn-6 die roll from pulling out a win despite that, so I felt pretty good about that one in the end). First time under .500 in a tourney for me since I started playing daemons.
Biggest personal gripe for me still has to be my first game where the Dark Elf army I'm facing has a High Elf Dragon converted up with three heads. Since I had so few drops, the opponant never stated what it was when it went down, and since it was 9 in the morning, I was a bit too fuzzy to actually take the care to ask - it had wings, I figured it was a dragon. No rider, but no handlers either. I think the real pisser was that even though I referred to it multiple times as "the dragon" it wasn't until the middle of my turn 3 or 4, after I had committed most of my forces to irrevocable courses of action, that he corrected me. Kinda moot anyway with one hydra making 8 of 9 regen saves and the other making 9 out of 12 - borderline suspicious, actually. Then he decided to start pushing me to go faster and go faster with still an hour to play... we ended up being among the first to finish. Lee Horn is not a person I would want to play again, and the only really lousy sport I played.
Sports score was surprisingly crappy for me, too. Score is a 0-4 per opponant, so average sports score should be a 10. Wow, I thought I was in a pretty good mood the whole time despite Murphy's Law kicking my ass.

I played the 6th place (2nd highest VC) guy and am sort of amazed that he placed so high.
I'll see if I can dig up his list - I recall it as being relatively soft. 30 ghouls in a horde formation was fun to see, though. _________________ There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.

Yeah the paint judging wasn't as obvious as it has been in the last few years. I was able to have a pretty good conversation with the paint judge when he did my army, but that was because it was after the third game of day 1, so there was no rush to do anything.
I liked the location, although we were definitely a little cramped like Eric said. Next year it was announced that the hotel is going to give us access to a much larger room because we can guarantee a massive turn out now. |

The 40k side of things was really well run.
The point level and time limit was perfect in my opinion. A lot of 40k tournaments are trying for 2000 points over 2 hours and that guarantees you'll not finish a game or two and that really screws some armies. 1850 at 2 and a half hours meant games could finish and there was time to talk to new friends and to look at some awesome armies.
I also liked the amount of terrain and the quality. Not every board was great but every board was Good Enough and the quality of the terrain was above average for the most part.
I had 2 really great games, 2 very good games, and 1 game that was good but rubbed me the wrong way for various reasons. Nothing to complain about but some people just rub me wrong and he did some things that seemed a little fishy. My two great games were really really awesome games.
I came out with two wins (one major and another minor), two draws (drew on primary and the secondary, teriary, and bonus points equaled out), and a loss.
It was a lot of fun and Ashley and I will definitely go again next year. It was great having dinner with Corey, Joey, and Kelly. I'm glad one of us walked away with something (and boy did Kelly deserve it!). |

I think next year I want to seriously organize far in advance a car pool to get up to the tournament. I think it would be a great time if we rented a van or better yet one of those charter buses (would allow us to get drunk ON THE WAY) if we got enough people. It's always a blast hanging out with the guys, and if we could expand on that then my favorite tournament would only get better!
On a side note, this was my most tame year at the Colonial. I got there too late on Friday to drink, and by the time I got there Joey was already drunk enough for the both of us. It was an experience just getting him to explain where the room was! And on Saturday, even though it was my birthday, I only drank enough to get a good buzz going and then called it a night around midnight. |

I had an awesome time. Don't remember Friday nite much though dinner at Ruby Tuesday's was awesome and the tournament was more fun than anticipated. I look forward to next year for sure.
I went 2-3 for the tournament and was dissapontied for sure. Beat 2 O&G players and lost to 2 Warrior list and a Lizardmen's front list. I blame that stupid dawn attack for that one
Larry's vampires looked awesome. My pictures of them turned out crappy. 2 large units of ghouls, painted white another large unit of Grave guard, 40 man or so, also in horde type unit. 3 vampires, coach, 3 wraiths, and a few ghost swarms. I didn't play him or see his list but that is what I remember of his list. _________________ Joey

I had a great time at Colonial. I took a throgg troll army and won 3 games and lost two. Unfortunately I ended up playing against 3 other WOC armies so not much diversity in the games, lots of hellcannons and tzeentch HWS warriors. I lost my first game against high elves on the last roll of the game, after breaking Eltharion from combat I was unable to catch him on the pursuit. I had great last game and could have probably pulled it out if not for throgg going stupid for the last 3 turns of the game. All great opponents. The location was pretty good, though a little tight at times. There was lots of good prize support, and it was nice having the Warstore vendor there.
